MERSEYSIDE REFUGEE SUPPORT NETWORK

MRSN is a registered charity and has developed and delivered innovative education, employability, wellbeing and integration support programmes for refugees for over 15 years in Liverpool.  We work with refugees on their transition to social-economic integration after receiving grant of leave to remain from the Home Office. We have an excellent track record of working with refugees to meet their immediate needs in the 28 day "move on" period, but it is our experience which defines the ongoing need for our work, as this is neither a sufficient time frame to get housing and welfare benefits in place to avoid the threat of homelessness/crisis through lack of money, nor does it enable any meaningful ongoing support to assist refugee clients with their onward integration, learning and employability.
Liverpool is the key asylum dispersal centre in the North West of England.  This means that people seeking asylum are housed in the city for their initial accommodation and then may also stay here whilst a decision on their asylum claim is determined.  Liverpool as a city hosts more asylum seekers than any other city across England and, therefore, we also have the largest number of new refugees - when their asylum claim is successful.  For over 15 years MRSN has developed a customised support and advocacy service for refugees in their move on transition as mainstream services are neither equipped or wholly empathetic to deal with this vulnerable client group, of whom most do not speak English as a first or second language.
We offer a more innovative and inclusive advocacy and learning support service which is effective at enabling refugees to fully integrate in their new community, and thereby addresses multiple disadvantage.  The many issues faced by our clients include - low levels of English language; lack of relevant work experience/references; variable or low level basic skills;  lack of digital inclusion skills; lack of understanding of rights/entitlements in amongst dealing with issues of post traumatic stress and other discrimination issues.
We have a small but dedicated and exceptionally experienced staff team, working with approximately 500 clients annually.
